Essential things everyone must do

Key info we need from YOU

In order to help us analyse the data that the project is gathering, there are some essential pieces of information that we need from you. Supplying this information will also increase your chances of connecting with relevant cousins who may be able to help you with your own Ryan genealogy.

MDKA (Most Distant Known Ancestor) information
This is the single most important piece of information you can supply to the project. Knowing the birth location of your MDKA will help us determine where certain genetic groups originated. You should provide your MDKA information in the following format:
James Ryan c1798 Templederry, Tipperary d1862 New York m Kate Barnes
There are only 50 characters allowed for this info so you may not get it all in.

To enter this information, sign in to FTDNA, hover over your name, click on My Profile, then the Genealogy tab, then the Earliest Known Ancestors tab, and then enter the information in the "Direct Paternal" section (both Country of Origin and Name). Or ask one of the Admins to do it for you!

Patriarchs & Pedigrees
We need the pedigree of your Ryan ancestral line, from your Ryan MDKA down to you. We will post this for you on the project's Patriarchs Page or you can do it yourself on the complementary Post Your Pedigree Page. This facilitates collaboration between project members and maximises your chances of making a breakthrough.

Please use the following format:
1) James RYAN b c1835 Nenagh, Tipperary, d 12 Nov 1879 Shallee, Co. Tipperary, m 13 Apr 1860 Maria BATES
2) Mortimer RYAN b 1861 etc ... (birth, death, marriage details)
3) Abigail RYAN b 1890 ... (as above)
4) Francis RYAN b 1917 … (as above)
Researcher: (insert your initials here)
Your email address: (use AT instead of @)
DNA Kit numbers: (insert the last 4 numbers of your DNA kit numbers)
Link to your online tree: www.xxxxxxx.com
To respect privacy and confidentiality, the following limitations are recommended:
  • no birth dates if less than 100 years
  • no marriage dates if less than 75 years
  • no death dates if less then 50 years
  • no living people (but you can use initials, or "father" / "grandmother" / "me" etc if you wish)

If you need any help with this, the Admins are more than happy to reply to any queries.
